Started from the Bottom

From a little Jewish bubby reading celebrity tweets, to having, Ron Jeremy, possibly the most (in)famous porn-star teaching us how to play the harmonica, the Boo Ya Pictures crew has intentionally, and by design, crossed the line in each and every one of their videos. Since March 2006, the Boo Ya crew has been coming up with absurdly funny and well produced comedy videos for their growing YouTube channel. Their very first video, a skit about brainstorming making a skit, gives us a glimpse into what was to come.

Now We’re Here

Doritos-Scream-Cheese-Bag | The Not So Lazy Lazy Boyz

March 2009 was the year they got on the map. The Boo Ya crew had won the Doritos Guru campaign, a contest based on the proposition: name the new Doritos flavour, create a commercial for it and in return we’ll pay the winner $25,000 and 1% of the flavour’s sales. The flavour that they invented and ultimately won with was “Scream Cheese”. They  created a commercial that had people in regular everyday situations, screaming wherever they would have normally been talking. To watch their Scream Cheese video CLICK HERE.

Lazy Boyz

LazyBoyz-Poster final Just over a year ago the Boo Ya team decided to venture into the crowd funding platform Indiegogo. Their goal was to raise $6,000 in order to produce their first short film, Lazy Boyz. The team exceeded their goal, and raised over $9,000. Lazy Boyz is a horror comedy about two slackers versus a KILLER COUCH. Mixing the old school methods of in camera affects with the new school technology, they put together a high quality 80s-style film.

This past month, the Boo Ya boys premiered Lazy Boyz as a short film at Cinema du Parc in Montreal. At the end of the Lazy Boyz launch, the whole cast and crew stood at the front of the theater and held a little Q&A. “Was this project any different then what you’re used to?” was the most popular question. The answer was yes. The Boo Ya guys had to work with all new, and better equipment, which meant a lot of learning. I felt as if the quality of the film was outstanding, and being someone who has been following the work of the Boo Ya team since the beginning, I am excited to see where this takes them next. I do know that they plan on submitting Lazy Boyz to a few film festivals with the hopes of cracking Hollywood.

The Secret to Their Success

The secret in my eyes has everything to do with their confidence. They can take any subject, find the humor in it, and then create a hysterical video out of it. Nothing is off-limits to them. For example, the Boo Ya team put together a trailer-spoof based on “This is 40″, called “This is 80″. This spoof is about 80 being the new 69, and features a bunch of Jewish grandparents from Montreal (watch the video to see if you recognize any of them) living as if they are young again. I feel “This Is 80″ is a very good example of where these boys are heading. They have the ability to create captivating 3-minute videos for their YouTube channel, but come up with ideas that could be full length movies.

Let’s see where this confidence takes them… In the meantime, stay up to date with the Boo Ya crew by subscribing to their YouTube channel and by watching their YouTube series, The Boo Ya Pictures Show.
